About a week ago on the Sports Bar a caller had said that the UNM Lobo men’s basketball team was on the threshold of being something very special, I happen to agree. Though this team has been a roller coaster ride this season, winning in streaks and looking real good, but on the flip side they’ve also lost in streaks and sometimes looking like a team that stepped back a year, this is no longer a work in progress, its more about tightening up some screws, spraying some WD 40 here and there to get this team well-greased and I do believe that next season will be something special to watch. You are asking yourself next season? What about now? This season is not done yet? Well you would be right to ask those questions, and I would simply answer with this, with six games left in Conference play and the season as a whole, leading up to the MWC Tournament the Lobos currently stand alone in second place. Not bad for a team who in preseason polls were projected to come in fifth or sixth. Will they hold in the standings that remains to be seen, there is no reason they can’t, will they finally find some consistency and stay winning, I think they can, certainly they know if they don’t stay consistent that could have an effect on their seeding come Tourney time. This team has been through a wild ride taking us along with them, clearly the talent is there, Tim Williams playing out of his mind, Elijah Brown a scoring threat, some good blue collar play by Xavier Adams, and three freshmen who are ready to take on the world. Yes they can do some damage this season, they have already surprised many of us by fielding a rather inexperienced group in second place, but doing this well now with only one senior on the roster is a good sign this team really is on the threshold of something special, each game is their classroom this is a smart squad I do like what I see. Watch it unfold this season, but keep in mind all they go through this year will yield some very good results next season, then you can get off the roller coaster and find yourself riding a smoother bullet train…
