There’s nothing like going home. University of New Mexico assistant coach Lamont Smith is heading to his Alma mater, the University of San Diego, to become their new men’s coach. Smith spent the last two seasons as Craig Neal’s top assistant. Recruiting the region should not be an issue for Smith who has more than enough West Coast ties and experience. It’s a great opportunity for the 39-year-old getting his first ever head coaching job and it being at the Division 1 level. Already Neal had seen two of his assistants become head coaches and he doesn’t mind that at all. He expressed his feelings in a press conference last week that losing coaches to better positions is not a bad thing, it shows the quality of the program. Who’s next? That’s yet to be determined, but there is no question sitting beside the head coach at UNM is a door opener.
