Buck Stops Here

The baseball playoffs have been fun so far.  I hope you’ve had a chance to enjoy them.  Some really good moments early, but one moment has people talking more than the rest.  The Dodger’s Chase Utley’s slide into second base that broke resulted the Mets’ Reuben Tejada’s broken leg.  Utley went into second base, fully attempting to break up a double play, allow a run to score and keep the inning alive for Los Angeles.  It was a hard slide.  It was a late slide.  It was a bit off line.  And it was nothing worse than anything that you can see in any given baseball game during the season, or in seasons past.  Utley was suspended for two games, a suspension he has appealed.  The bottom line here is, you cannot change the way you enforce rules in the playoffs.  For a lot of years, this play has been “part of the game”.  It’s commonplace.  It may not be right, but it has been accepted.  If baseball wants to address this, fine…address it in the offseason.  Let players know that it will be officiated differently and thus, players can respond.  But just because someone got hurt…and that is unfortunate…you can’t suspend a guy for playing the game
