Buck Stops Here

Rivalry week is different in New Mexico. It’s different because the history of football is not pleasant. It’s different because over the past decade there has been a lot of bad football. This year it’s different because both teams feel like they are on to something new. The Lobos are back to even, 2-2 overall, with their goal of a bowl game still in front of them. The Aggies are coming off of two losses by a total of five points. They had a chance to take home both games but sit at 0-3. Doug Martin’s crew is passing the eye test. Speed on the field and the ability to withstand the physicality of the game. NMSU is where the Lobos were last season, giving themselves a chance in games but not able to make the winning play. Coming off a 38-28 win at Wyoming the Lobos feel they are ready to make that winning play and make it two wins in a row Saturday at University Stadium. Offense is key for both teams. The Lobos got back to what they did well, execute the triple-option and find explosive plays. Junior quarterback Tyler Rodgers is growing as he’s thrown for 858 yards with seven touchdowns and only two interceptions. The Lobos secondary and the Aggies front seven could be the difference makers for both teams. Can the Lobos win one-on-one when needed and tackle in space? Can the Aggies withstand a rushing attack that greased it wheels at Wyoming? It’s a different game because fans will be ready. Despite the past and recent history these are the two division one football schools in the state. The smack talk hits home when you work or live beside a Lobo or Aggie. A true college football atmosphere is hard to find but Saturday we’ll have just that at 6 o’clock.
