Two Steps forward; a giant leap back

Week number three begins for the Lobo football team and they start their season at 1-1. They head into their first road game to Tempe, Arizona to take on the Pac 12 Arizona State Sun Devils, in what appears to be a very tall and daunting task, as the Lobos are two digit underdogs. As we know game one versus FCS Mississippi Valley State saw the Lobos destroy them 66-0 and dominated on all facets of the game. Then came game two, Tulsa comes to town and the Lobos lose 40-21 in a game in which many expected them to win. So who is this team and where are they headed? Is it already time to pull the rip cord and give up? The answer to the first question is this team is a program that is desperate to prove they can win and be competitive, they are hungry and there is fight in them as well as effort, but they are the work in progress that Coach Davie says they are, a team that at times plays sloppy and has brain lapses ala the 14 penalties for 154 yards (8 which were personal fouls) against Tulsa on Saturday. So I would say they are just between both those first two games, not championship caliber, but not as bad as many of the naysayers would contend. As for pulling the rip cord, absolutely not, it’s game two, gimme a break, there is still plenty of ball yet to play, yes there is a sense of urgency and yes conference play yields some tough games ahead, and yes this team has to do better defensively, but in college football nothing is easily predictable, so hang in there and let’s take things week to week.
