Jeff’s Journal

We had an interesting conversation this week on the show about realistic expectations for football programs.  What is fair to expect every year from your team and your coach, when is it time to make a change and what should fans expect every year.  There are so many factors in this.  We all want our teams to win.  We want them to win every year, then get better the next and never have a “down” year.  Obviously that’s not practical.  And, it is just about impossible for a fan, no matter how educated or involved that fan is, to be able to grasp the entire scope of the situation.  It’s hard to win a college football game.  The other teams is preparing every day, every week…..getting their teams better.  They want to win too.  Every game I’ve ever been to, half of the teams lose. And patience is not something that exists with fans of any team.  So where is the fine line?  If the program is getting better, on the right track, doing things the right way and you can see better things in the future, then I believe you stay the course.  Of course not everyone sees the situation the same way.  Former Lobo coach Rocky Long is catching heat at San Diego State with Aztec fans unhappy.  JJ said to me this week, “sounds familiar….like what happened here.”  San Diego State had been to three bowl games in the four previous decades.  They’ve now been to five bowls in a row.  I fully realize going to a bowl game these days doesn’t equate exactly to what it meant 30 years ago, but does that sound familiar to you?  Sometimes, be careful for what you wish
