National Spotlight

It thrills me to no end when Albuquerque gets some national spotlight shed onto her! While the controversial show Breaking Bad aired and will forever exist, here, there, or somewhere, so will the beautiful city of Albuquerque in that great and well shot production. No one can argue that for Albuquerque, that is a bad thing. However, before Breaking Bad, two entities that have given Albuq. a great platform on the national stage, come in the form of a sporting event and a legendary local hero who suffered an untimely passing. Let’s get into the latter first… Johnny Tapia who as we all know, had a controversial and troubled life, but two things that there were no doubt about were he was one of the greatest athletes from Albuquerque of all time, and he also loved his city very much! Every fight, yes every fight, that he had nationally, he got into the camera, with literal blood, sweat and sometimes tears and would proclaim "I love you Albuquerque, I'm still your champion!" Even now that he is gone you will hear those words again, as last night the Documentary entitled "Tapia' aired on HBO, and it will air several times again (check your local listings). You will see the Duke City in moments of sadness, joy and awesome historical moments like never before. Again tragic, this is a great representation of a fine tough fight town and one of the city's sons who is greatly missed. On a lighter note, this Saturday we will also see the 9th Annual Gildan New Mexico Bowl at Branch Field at University Stadium. The game features UTEP vs. Utah ST. Again folks, Albuquerque gets the spotlight in one of the first Bowl games to be nationally televised! So head on out with your grill, your green chile, and your cherry and silver gear to represent. Who knows? You may be discovered by a local producer! What is for sure though, our beautiful sky, great folks, awesome stadium and wonderful Sandia Mountains will get the rest of the country excited about Albuquerque. Whew! Gets me pumped up! Haha. Can't wait!
