Hoops Season, It is on!
Now comes that time of the year where Lobo football is getting ready to wrap it up. With just two games to play, one at home, and one on the road, the focus begins to shift. I will miss the college football season here at home. I enjoyed watching and evaluating the talent and growth of these young men and sharing my thoughts with you on the Sports Bar. Seeing as it’s not 100% done, I will continue to watch and bring you my takes on the Lobos vs. Colorado St. and Wyoming. However springing into action with already 2 wins under their belt is Lobo basketball! That makes me excited, as one season closes another opens! Friday was the home opener vs. Idaho St. which brought the Lobos their first victory of the 2014-15 season with a score of 79-55. Then came Sunday’s game vs. Cal State Fullerton, which was somewhat of a scrappy game, but still the Lobos were able to move ahead to their second victory by the score of 67-59. A game that again was a little bit of a fight, but at no time did you ever feel that UNM was ever in jeopardy of losing. The atmosphere at the Pit is always exciting, the fan base alive and electric, but at times needed to be shocked. Yes they were into it, but I felt every now and they reminded me of winter clothes, ready to wear but in need of some breaking in. That will go away soon surely. As for the team itself I am excited to see what this young squad is made of. A work in progress, needless to say, but I've got a gut feeling that over time, Cullen Neal, Hugh Greenwood and company will provide the fan base many smiles and some solid competition. Other players to watch: Deshawn Delaney, Obij Aget and J.J. N'Ganga. Oh, and a 6'9" Junior College transfer at forward Jordon Goodman, who as we have seen needs more playing time and work, but when he finally falls into his groove and this team finds its chemistry …whoa lookout! They may surprise the nation! Thursday is a big test for them in this early season, as they head out east to participate in the Puerto Rico Tip Off, and begin tournament play against Boston College. Can't wait! I'm glad college hoops are here again, and I can't wait to give you my thoughts on Lobo basketball on the Sport Bar this season. Tune in!
