Cullen Neal
This past Monday's show was a bit of a stunner to me, and I don't get surprised by much on our show. The Lobo basketball team won their first two games of the season and a kid who played high school basketball in Albuquerque led them in scoring. And fans on the phones and e-mails called in about that player in high volume. Not to praise that player and gloat that he is "one of ours", but rather to bash him. Cullen Neal happens to be the son of the head coach. Cullen Neal plays without a filter-his heart on his sleeve. He is emotional, appears out of control at times and is the kind of guy you probably love if he is on your team and hate if he is on the other team. Here's the deal: He is on YOUR team. This town loves players who are from here. Fans call Houston Texans running back Arian Foster a former Valley Viking. He went to Valley High School, but actually played his high school football in San Diego. Cullen Neal averaged 24.5 points over the first two games and averaged just two turnovers. If it wasn't for his offensive aggressiveness, the Lobos probably lose to Cal St. Fullerton (again). Maybe some of the animosity stems from his high school days at Eldorado; old rivalries die slowly. I get it… Cullen is a polarizing personality, but he is "one of us". Give him a chance. I've never seen Lobo fans be so tough on of their own.
