Was that passion we heard from Lobo Football fans this week?
I do believe it was. And it was really nice. Now granted, it took a questionable call in a close loss to bring Lobo fan out in numbers on the phone lines, but it reminds us that there are actually people who will care about UNM football in November, if you give them something to care about. The loss to Boise State last weekend was tough. Gut-wrenching in many respects. It was highlighted by a replay reversal of a first down call that cost the Lobos a chance to continue what could have been a game-winning drive. Let me be clear – there is no guarantee the Lobos would have won the game, but we all wanted to see what would have happened. We wanted the game to be decided on the field, not in the replay booth. I think Bob Davie handled the situation incredibly well. He was measured in his comments until the Mountain West Conference put out a statement that the call was correct. Bob then defended his team. Here's the bottom line in all of this: The Lobos went toe-to-toe with the benchmark team in their league and had a chance to win a game… in November. And Lobo fans cared. That's a big deal around here as we take baby steps to get this program back to respectability.
