Lobo Football
"Got to be able to throw the football to win," New Mexico head coach Bob Davie said this week on The Opening Drive. New Mexico quarterbacks have attempted 90 passes this season. And yes, that is not a lot. The Lobos offense is a triple-option, run-based attack (304.4 yards per-game). The quarterback needs to execute the right reads and be able to run. Cole Gautsche excels at that but can't pass. Redshirt freshman Lamar Jordan can do both but is still young. Despite all the talk about the quarterbacks, the Lobos offense isn't their problem. This week at UNLV it will be on the Lobos defense to give the offense a chance to roll. The Rebels have given up 26 sacks this season as their quarterback Blake Decker can use his legs but also has thrown 12 interceptions this season. If the Lobos can't get pressure on Decker he could have a field day. Freshman Devonte Boyd has lead the way with 33 catches for 562 yards and two touchdowns. The difference make will be if senior receiver Devante Davis plays. Davis had three touchdown receptions last year at University Stadium. Both programs are hungry for a win and Saturday's game should prove that by being a competitive contest.
