Something to remind me
Week four in the NFL is in the books, and after following the news in the league this summer, which has been less than stellar, it's refreshing to know that despite all the craziness I still love the game. However I did need somewhat of a reminder, and that came in this Monday night’s matchup between the New England Patriots and the Kansas City Chiefs. I have always been a Chiefs fan just by virtue of disliking their divisional rivals: The Denver Broncos and the Oakland Raiders. I've taken trips to KC and visited Arrowhead Stadium, tailgated there, screamed and partied there, and brought back lots of stuff for my man cave. After covering all the bad news in the National Football League this summer I have to admit some fatigue and disillusionment set in. Then came this Monday night and I felt like I was in the early to mid nineties, a period where the Chiefs had dominated and the fan base was phenomenal. Not only did my favorite team take the hated Bill Billichik, Tom Brady and company to the woodshed by beating them on national television 41 to 14, but pure energy and excitement was clearly in the air. From the Marine Corp marching band playing the National Anthem and 70,000 plus singing it, to legendary former Chiefs running back Christian Okoye "the Nigerian nightmare" banging the war drum prior to the team coming out, and to the crazies again in the stands literally breaking records with decibel levels one could only hear at an airport because of their enthusiasm. I was brought back to a time where the game was an escape for life's crushing days. I know now I still love the game, and unfortunately we still have to deal with the realities of life directly or indirectly effecting the league, but I am still encouraged that for at least 3 hours plus I can be a loud crazy fan again!
