ESPN
Greetings everyone!
I hope everyone has had an excellent week! Believe me, being a media member, I understand how difficult it is sometimes to bring newsworthy and entertaining topics and issues to the forefront on a daily basis being as sometimes there's just not a whole lot going on of note. While this creates an issue, that doesn't mean that I can go around making up stories and I certainly have to exercise good judgment in determining what stories or topics are "outside the box" and will be good radio… or simply a topic that is one that could be identified right away as reeking of desperation to have something to discuss. This was illustrated by the four letter network, ESPN yesterday in their Michael Sam coverage. I understand that Sam has a microscope on him at the moment as the Rams decide whether he makes the final 53-man roster (he made the cut to 75 yesterday), but ESPN's coverage of Sam yesterday was absolutely pathetic. It's bad enough that the network has really gotten to a point where they no longer cover sports… they determine what is important in sports and what isn't. In essence, sports needs ESPN as much as ESPN needs sports. That doesn't mean that one of their reporters, Josina Anderson, reporting from Rams camp yesterday detailing to the viewer what Michael Sam's shower habits are and who was willing to talk about that is news. It's NOT news! It's things like this that continue to keep the prejudices and biases in place. If it's reported and treated differently, whether that be a person, place or thing… then it's going to be viewed as different. Until ESPN reports on everyone's shower habits, they're feeding into the practice of trying to grow the gulf of intolerance and unacceptance. If it's a slow news day, you can only stir the pot so much!
Have a great week!!
