Go down with the ship or build your own? That's the decision the Mountain West and non-power conferences around the country face moving forward with college athletics. The money is pouring into programs in the SEC, PAC-12, Big 12, Big 10 and ACC. Not the case with the rest. August 7th the NCAA Board of Directors will vote on giving the power five conferences a bigger say in votes and the ability to do what ever their income. College sports can no longer hide behind student-athletes. The money is too large and the questions are too many. The only thing everyone can agree on is that changes are coming. No one has any idea what those changes are or what they'll mean for college sports. If the MW joined with the non-power conferences to form their own league and playoffs, it would not change the money issue. They would still be behind hoping for a nice television deal. Does it reignite dormant fan bases now that they have something to play for? So many questions, no true answers. It appears the best course for the non-power schools would be to right it out, go down with the ship and rebuild athletics. That wouldn't be fun. A decision has to be made and the longer it's put off, the harder it will be to see a bright future for college athletics.
