The other day Carlyle and I had an interesting discussion with our listeners regarding the Golden State Warriors and their pursuit of breaking the record of most wins in the regular season, which up until Sunday was held by the 95/96 Chicago Bulls, at 72. Golden State tied the record, and have one more game in which to surpass the Bulls. We both maintained that such a record is absolutely remarkable, and that it could be sometime before it is broken again, time will tell, records are meant to be broken. Be that as it may where we found disagreement was, Carlyle said with this record if the Warriors do not come out with a Championship the record means nothing. I on the other hand feel that IT IS totally relevant, let’s say hypothetically the Warriors do not win the Championship, yea the luster of the star (the record) would somewhat dim, but winning 72 or 73 regular season games out of and 82 game season, are you kidding me? The amount of stamina, mental and intestinal fortitude, athleticism, and many of the other factors in the game which is basically a war of attrition, cannot be just dismissed even if a Championship is not achieved. Years ago in my youth championships were all that mattered, but part of why we watch sports is because of records, no one can take away accomplishments that Miami Dolphin QB Dan Marino did over the course of his career just because he didn’t win the big game. Sure it would have stamped his greatness, but by no means does one forget about what he did. Does 2nd place get forgotten, yes most of the time it does, but again sports mean numbers, and numbers are infinite, it is a weird argument, one in which there is no right answer, so in the meantime go Warriors, and ultimately just win the Championship or we’re gonna argue forever…
