Can I spend a minute giving props to Lobo Football? Sure I can, and I hope the rest of this town does too. This just concluded regular season, which saw the UNM football team go 7-5 and tie for second place in their division was sensational. When you put into perspective where they have been as a program over the past seven years, who they beat and how they beat them, this year was as good as anyone could have expected…probably better. When UNM lost at San Jose State and was 4-4 headed into November, there are very few who thought bowl eligibility was possible, let alone 7-5 and a run at a championship. I didn’t. Then they beat Utah State, a team who had won 10-games in each of the last three season, they won at Boise State who was 96-4 in their previous 100-home games (and UNM was a 30+ point underdog), and finished it with a win over Air Force….a Falcon team who will play for the Mountain West championship this weekend. This was a sensational season by this young football team…a program on the rise. Now get ready to celebrate with them as UNM plays in their first bowl game since 2007. More on that next week…..
