The Howling

In typical fashion for Albuquerque weather late Saturday afternoon at Branch Field at University of New Mexico Stadium it rained in hard cold spurts for about 20 minutes on many of us, making one wonder if this was how it would be throughout the night, but again I remind you this is Albuquerque, and so it simply passed, complete with a rainbow and sunny weather heading into the night. However the rain never stopped for the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils, who were the unfortunate victims to defeat delivered by the hands of the UNM Lobos by the score of 66-0. A great victory needless to say, one that this program needed in so many ways to open up this much anticipated season. They simply clicked on all cylinders and played hungry, excited and sharp, and while one may argue that this was an FCS team, an inferior opponent, credit  the Lobos for a). playing hard to a team that’s in front of them and b). delivering the goods in convincing fashion, setting a pace for themselves with this nice home opener. Now the real work is to begin as this Saturday they play Tulsa in a very important match up, one that literally could mean all the aces for them and this season. The one thing that I can take away from last week’s game is I feel Bob Davie has this squad confident and hungry, and with having a real good taste of a good win they understand that each week gets more difficult with each opponent, so move on and prepare hard and don’t rest on the laurels of last week because a reaching a bowl game doesn’t come by beating one team in a route. I like what I see so far, some of the highlights for me was the quarterback position in Lamar Jordon, there is some impressive growth in this young man, he ran, he threw, he scored but most of all he was in complete control. Two other things that impressed me, among many, was the offensive line, having gone through some changes due to injury they responded well, and lastly tackling on the defensive side looks as if it has been improved. Still a way to go for this season, but definitely a nice way to start. I’ll take it and remember it for a very long time.
