Week one of college football is in the books. What does it all mean for the Lobos and Aggies? Honest answer. I don’t know, and I don’t think anyone else knows either. UNM rolled over a horribly over matched Mississippi Valley State team 66-0, while New Mexico State got hammered 61-13 by the SEC’s Florida Gators. For both teams, in many ways, the season starts this weekend. For the Lobos, they go into the home contest against Tulsa with a lot of confidence. Eight different players scored touchdowns, the defense gave up only 74 yards to the Delta Devils, and they looked good in just about every facet of the game. They are better. How much better? I think they are quite a bit better but we will find out over the next few weeks against Tulsa, Arizona State and Wyoming. In Las Cruces, the Aggies will play their home opener…and conference opener, against Georgia State in a game that will let us know how much better NMSU is. The Ags showed flashes against Florida; quarterback Tyler Rogers made good decisions and good throws all day; he didn’t turn the ball over against an SEC team on the road. Sophomore running back Larry Rose III was really good and the defense showed improvement against the run. Enjoy this weekend. We should learn a lot about both the Lobos and the Aggies. Oh, and they play each other on October 3rd.
