Let’s get in on, infamous words, no not from the Marvin Gaye song, but infamous words from one of MMA’s most seasoned referees named “Big” John McCarthy prior to every fight that he is about to officiate. Let’s get it on, for better or for worse, Jan 2nd 2016 The MGM Grand in Las Vegas, NV. as Albuquerque’s “The Preacher’s Daughter” Holly Holm will step into the Octagon with arguably the UFC”s biggest star “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey . News came down last Friday, as Rousey made the announcement on Good Morning America, and the news as expected shook the core of the Duke City. It was 9am and I was still asleep only to be awoken by several urgent texts and phone calls asking me if I had heard the news and any details regarding this much anticipated match up. I’ve got to tell you I was blown away to the core by hearing this news myself, I’ve known for quite some time that this match up would eventually happen, but not as soon as Jan. 2nd 2016. Not quite a week yet so I still have several thoughts that really need to soak in my noggin for this fight, stand by and over the course of the next few days, weeks and months I will give you my takes regarding one of the biggest and most hyped fights New Mexico will see in one of its fighters since the epic showdown between Albuquerque’s Johnny Tapia and Danny Romero in 1997. Am I excited? You betcha! Am I nervous for Holm? You betcha! Am I declaring a winner? Not yet, still plenty of time to go…for now I am going to bask in this great news, as 3 other fighters in the UFC with Albuquerque ties, John Dodson, Carlos Condit, and Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone , two who hail from Albuq.(Dodson, Condit) and one who trains here, will fight for Gold as well, those fights will hopefully help keep my mind in perspective, and at the very least keep my mind off Holm and Rousey (who am I kidding) but I certainly will not give the easy and lazy take that Rhonda will be easily be crowned. That’s why they get it on!
