For the first time as New Mexico head football coach, Bob Davie is talking openly about going to a bowl game. This past Monday Davie was a guest on The Opening Drive where he said it is a legitimate goal for this year’s team to get to a bowl game. That would require at least six wins and would be the first bowl appearance for UNM since their 2007 Gildan New Mexico Bowl victory. For a team that has won 14 games total over the last six years talking about a bowl game hasn’t happened in a while. Despite only winning four games last season the eye test showed UNM is improving. Their current roster could be the best they have had in the last seven to eight years. The schedule features seven home games and the mountain heavy weights (Boise State, Utah State, Colorado State, and Air Force) don’t appear until the final month of November. You can see why Davie and company is finally talking about a bowl game and willing to accept the pressure that comes from that. However a good portion of the fan base is still in wait and see mode. It’s easy to get excited from the talk but selling tickets and filling up the stadium will come from the performance of the football team. The rebuilding process has finally hit a point where the Lobos feel they have a foundation to stand on. As Herm Edwards classically said, “You play to win the game.” The Lobos hit the field for the first time September 5th at home against Mississippi Valley State. That’s when the talk turns into action.
