As we all enjoy the NCAA Tournament, some schools are deciding who is going to be the next head coach of their basketball team. The Mountain West has two current openings, Nevada and Utah State. According to reports Eric Musselman is in serious talks to become the next head coach at Nevada. Musselman is 50 years-old and has coached in the NBA, D-League and college. He’s a proven veteran coach. Then there are coaches like Justin Hutson, an assistant at San Diego State. Hutson hasn’t been a head coach yet and for him that limits his options. Not many ‘power’ conference schools are giving Hutson one million plus as a first time head coach. Is that the right thing to do? Why do coaches have to climb the ladder? Major League Baseball has begun to buck that trend hiring former players without coaching experience at any major level. Colorado did it with Walt Weiss, St. Louis and the Chicago White Sox’s have also gone that route. An organization always has to be thinking outside the box. The veteran coach works but don’t get stuck in a rut. Justin Hutson could be the next big thing or just another name that fades away. Nothing is a given with coaches or players. Hits and misses will continue to be apart of sports for the rest of time. You could just be giving the next Mike Krzyzewski his first coaching job. You never know.
