Mt’s Newsletter 10/9

I'm gonna step out of my broadcaster self for just a moment and reflect as a fan, in what could be the fans’ biggest hurdle, the waiting game. Waiting for your team to A) Get over the hump and begin a winning or at least have a competitive culture, ala the UNM Lobo football team, or B) The team which has it  all already: a winning culture, a great season record, great talent, all the money that they need and then some and all the marks of a championship team. Only to watch it squandered in the postseason, ala the LA Dodgers, who just got bounced again from postseason play by the St. Louis Cardinals. Let's touch on A first, waiting for the Lobos. While it may sound difficult, it really is not. Looking at the youth and talent on this team is very encouraging. Coach Davie may be pulling his hair out week in and week out, but there is light at the end of the tunnel, as dismal as the tunnel may be. With all the clichés like Rome wasn't built in a day, etc., one would simply get excited with just the mere construction under way. I would much rather see the bricks of the foundation being laid down with the hope of a great finished product in the near future. It's exciting to watch your house being built. I'm willing to wait. Good things are coming in Davie’s 5-year plan. Stand by and have fun watching it grow.
As for B., a team like the LA Dodgers or the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, simply put, money can't buy you love (or a championship).  That can be understandable as there are winners and losers, but if money can't motivate, improve, or move a team forward from where they were a year ago then that is a problem. The circus becomes embarrassing and intolerable. I'm feeling like many fans of their pro teams that get to the postseason regularly, sick and tired of waiting, while watching other clubs continually have success and asking yourself, why can't my team do this? Does that mean I'm willing to jump ship, haha no! I'm loyal to a fault, they have me by the you know what! So while waiting for Rome to be built may be one approach, watching it fall is another. They have me as a lifelong fan, but in a world with so many other things to do to pass up my time, these frustrating franchises built with all the money in the world (empires), have got to remember who got them there in the first place. Tired, hungry, impatient fans with money too that are willing to spend it elsewhere, affecting your bottom line! While this may sound naive, a smart business man or organization would never, or ever should, take that for granted.
