Rocky's Aztecs
Another Friday night Lobo football game at University Stadium this week. But this doesn't feel like just another game. For one, the Lobos are coming off a win; an encouraging win, on the road against a team that was a favorite in Conference USA, U-T San Antonio. And… former Lobo coach and quarterback Rocky Long will be on the other sideline as the head coach of the San Diego State Aztecs. I just hope there's a good crowd out there to see it and the place looks good on national television. A win over Rocky's Aztecs would even UNM's record at 3-3 and maybe, just maybe, get people talking football again in mid-October around here. I also hope Rocky gets a warm reception. This isn't the first time he will back in University Stadium since he left UNM, but it will be the first time he is back as a head coach. He is the all-time winningest coach in program history. He is a proud alum who openly professes his love for this place. He is a coach who built the program into something of which this community could be proud: a tough, competitive team that went to bowl games. Yes, Rocky is gone, and yes, it's long past time to move on, but moving on doesn't mean forgetting. Remember Rocky and all he put into this program… taking it to levels of consistency never seen before or since. And then, as it should be, once the game begins, root for your team to win. It would be a huge victory for the Lobos is they can get it over the hated Aztecs.
