Bob Davie

I feel for Lobo Football Coach Bob Davie.  Now, I fully realize that he signed up for this when he accepted the job and all that goes with it, but so much of what he deals with, and what all coaches and administrators deal with, is out of his control.  He got news this week that one of his starting linemen, Jamal Price was arrested and charged with breaking and entering along with conspiracy to commit a fourth-degree felony.  And of course, this is the second high profile legal story involving UNM football players in the last few months.  All this as camp opens on Thursday.  While the talk should be about the team, defenses and schedules, the focus once again was on arrests.  A football coach's livelihood is dependent on how 18-23 young men act.  He has a good week if a 19-year old kicker makes a last second field goal or a bad week if a 20-year old misses a tackle or drops a ball. It's a tough way to make a living.  I honestly believe Bob Davie is teaching and demanding discipline in his program and is holding young men accountable for their actions.  But, and parents know this…you can teach and preach all you want;  at some point it is incumbent upon the individual to hear what is being said, and incorporate the lesson into their actions.  I don't hold the coach responsible for all these off the field discretions.  At some point individuals have to be held responsible for their actions…on and off the field.
